The advantages of warm water swimming:

 

  • Swimming is an excellent form of non weight bearing exercise. 

  • The warm water relaxes the muscles and increases blood flow. In this state the muscles are able to stretch easily with less discomfort 

  • The pressure of the water on the body helps to increase both lymph and blood circulation especially in the limbs, again helping muscles to relax and move more freely. 

  • The water pressure has a calming effect on the body.  Lastly, the water supports the body and stabilizes the joints causing movement and stretching to be safer. 

  • Meanwhile, the resistance of the water causes the muscles and joints to work harder (than air resistance)  without stressing the muscles or joints with body weight. 

  • Your dog is working 12 times harder moving in water than in air, which makes swimming an effective yet gentle form of exercise.
